From a note in a sketch book:

So exquisite is the glistering of the stars through loop holes in the thick woven canopy of ancient elm trees - of stars differing in glory, and one of prime lustre piercing the gloom - and all dancing with instant change as the leaves play in the wind that I cannot help thinking that Milton intended his "shady roof / Of branching elm star proof" as a double stroke - as he tells of the impervious leafy gloom - glancing at its beautiful opposite - "Loop holes cut through thickest shade" and in them socketed the gems which sparkle on the Ethiopic forehead of the night.
